Hello, I have a problem with Policenauts on PC98, I use Anex86, and I configured it like you said. I have put the content of the folder ’CD’ on a CD-RW, so I have a CD with ’PNauts.bin’ and ’PNauts.cue’ inside. The CD drive on my computer is ’D:’, so I configured the panel ’CDX’ of Anex86 to ’D’. For linking please use: This gallery (and all of Junker HQ) was created for the collector, because when I began. Sep 03, 2013 Honestly all versions of Policenauts are fairly adult and Kojima was involved in the production of all them, so I don’t think it was censored anywhere near as much as the later Snatcher ports were when he wasn’t involved. Sat Jul 20, 2013 11:26 am: SnatcherMkII. Policenauts is a Japanese-style adventure with action elements, similar in many ways to Snatcher. The player interacts with the environment in a point-and-click fashion: positioning a cursor over an object allows the player character to examine it or perform other context-dependent actions.Policenauts is the kind of game, that you play for 10 minutes, then drop your pad telling yourself ’I want this to last forever .. but it’s gonna end. And I’ll have to live with it’. That’s exactly what I felt when I first played the Saturn version (with the Lightgun) of this masterpiece. I stood in front of BCP HQ for ages listening the XA track looping again and again, or investigating Karen’s CD collection for hours.I can also remember sitting in a theatre watching Lethal Weapon 4, I jumped off my seat almost screaming when I noticed that there was a red laser aiming device on Mel Gibson’s gun, just like Jonathan’s ! My girlfriend thought I went nuts.Long after I played the PSX version and explored religiously the PSX Private Collection and 3DO Pilot Disks. They are particularly informative about the new CGs, anime and additions to these versions. Unfortunately, this game was not released outside Japan, which is a shame since tons of fans signed petitions in the US and Europe to ask it to Konami. Policenauts is often referred as Kojima’s favourite creation. When I heard that this game was first made for PC-98 computers, I was already fascinated by these legendary machines. But back then, there were very few emulators, so it took me a few more years to realize that the dream might come true. I built this website to promote PC-98 gaming and spent days and night on WinMX to gather and sort games. And one fine day I was contacted by RaiRai who lives in Japan and became the biggest game supplier of this site. He sent me Policenauts (a copy at first and then an original game) together with finely tuned boot disks. My goal was achieved ! At that time I was thinking about emulating the game to play, but it became clear that it would be difficult : the only emulator that can run it at a decent speed is T98-Next, but the PCM samples are so badly emulated that any normal human will turn the speakers off. I would have played any other game without sound , but not Policenauts. I decided to buy a PC-9821 to run this game properly. I actually bought 2 because the first one was broken. For the second one, thanks to RaiRai’s wise advises, everything went well. 7 years after playing the Saturn version, I could finally explore the original. This article is not pretending to be the ultimate reference about this game but more a fan’s tribute and an analysis of the PC9821 version.
OLD L.A. 2040 - Earth is now reffered as ’Home’, and there is snow in California, it might be an anticipation vision about climatic changes due to pollution. If you don’t know anything about this game or if you want to know more, I suggest you read this Wikipedia article. If it’s a walkthrough you are looking for, one of the best around is surely on the U.K. Policenauts Resource. You will learn most of the plot in these two websites .. and eventually look at Konami’s Official Policenauts Website.I first played the Saturn version and was blown away by the experience. Many fans talk about this game as an ’experience’. I think it is, really. It was the first time that I paused the game to listen the music for ages. Policenauts musics were composed by Tappy (jazz musician), Ika-Chan and Motoaki Furukawa. On Tappy’s website you will learn (if you look closely) that Karen theme is more than inspired by a NHK drama .. Ika-Chan composed Snatcher themes and is apparently still working for Konami.I consider the Saturn and PSX versions visually identical except for the bonuses and since the PSX version is quite well emulated, I used it as a base for comparisons. Unfortunately, I do not own the 3DO version, and I never seen it running so I can’t talk about it. The PC-9821 version is in 16 colors and the screen resolution is 640x400 and is my favourite, the other versions have true color graphics and a screen resolution of 320x240. Kodak esp office 2150 printer driver for mac os 10 12. The anime made by AIC and the cheap CG scenes were not present in the PC-9821 version, all graphics are pixel drawn.Back in 1994, PC-98 games were mostly released on floppies and played chiptune music. Policenauts has been released on a CD and uses it mainly for PCM voices (350 Mb), game data (14 Mb), and CD tracks (5 of them - 181 Mb). This huge work on sound makes Policenauts a gem among PC-98 games and it’s deep and intense athmosphere is unequalled except maybe by the Psychic Detective Series.
The introduction explains the plot and the player finds himself in Jonathan’s office. Some details like the empty beer cans, the Marlboro cigarette pack and the sticker on the answerphone have been added to the most recent versions, there are description for these if you click on them, but no spoken speech.
The on-line database (an in-game system allowing the player to access specific definitions and explanations of terms in the game) found on PSX is missing in the PC-9821 version. Not a big loss for me ;).This CG is puzzling me because usually, in Ideo Kojima’s game intros there are references to his other works. I still remember my surprise when I heard the ’doop-doop doop-doop-doop’ in Metal Gear Solid intro. Here, I can see the words ’sports’, ’billiard’, ’MOC’, ’liqueur’, and a word that looks like ’Lucey’.Even this weird ’Eyes Eyes Soloscot’ sign doesn’t ring any bell .. Anyway I was quite surprised by the fact that there is snow on the road but not so much on the pavement (usually it’s the contrary), I understood later that this allows Jonathan to notice the footsteps in the snow.Lorraine H么j么 is about to get out of the old fashioned car, to enter Jonathan’s Office. Here are a few shots of his ’agency’ taken from the intro sequence :12345. Jonathan’s Office is a mess just like his life at this point. This page shows the PC-9821 and PSX titles.Lorrainealso looks a bit older in the PC-9821 version. Not much to say about their meeting, Lorraine is leading Jonathan on a case after the death of her husband. While leaving, Lorraine is badly injured by the explosion of her car, in front of Jonathan’s eyes.Very instructive CG (the 2 screens of the shooting scene have been merged).First, check out the ’Circo Porto’ advertising sign : As this page and this page mentions, Konami has a chain of arcade accross Japan. The CG seems to indicate that Tokugawa Corp. now owns the chain. Other Konami games like Parodius contain ’Circo Porto’ references.Second, there is a porno theatre in front of Jonathan’s. We can read ’open tensai adues (adults) only’. I found references to ’Debbie does em all’ which is a porno flick, but nothing about ’Who will be first’ and ’Star Angel’.Third, two brands are mentionned on top of the shops : Piemonte Ravioli which is a genuine shop in New York, and Alleva is also one of the oldest Italian stores in NY. Make sure you look at the ’Contact Us’ section of their web site and compare it to the above CG, for me it’s a proof that the artists took New York as a base to design Old L.A.In the next scenes, Jonathan will fight the criminal in a back-street, before he escapes with a bike.Back to the crime scene, Jonathan will see Lorraine die in his arms. He has now to leave for space, facing his cosmophobia, to start investigating.

I hope this is the right place to post this. I just want to help some fellow Retropie PC98 fans as these tips can’t be found in the official Retropie Docs.
I’ve experimented a bit with the lr-np2kai core and got a lot of games to work. Probably the most difficult to get running was Policenauts, as it uses the HDD for installed files, a bootdisk and a CD for the audio. But I’ll come back to this later.Policenauts Pc98 English
First of all - as in many lr cores - you can set up m3u files with a list of all disks of one game and an easy change of these disks through disk control. One thing np2kai handles differenty with m3u is that the first two disks are inserted into fd1 and fd2 automatically! This is especially helpful with games that use disks for saving (user disks). So you put in the boot disk in the first m3u slot and the user disk in the second and you are good to go! Nice! Also, whenever the disks need to be changed, only the one in fd2 is changed.
The only thing missing on the Retropie side is, that you have to manually edit the es_emulators.cfg and add the m3u/M3U extension to the list of accepted extensions for pc98.(I did another step and put all multidisk games into a subfolder and excluded subfolders from scraping.)Policenauts Pc 9821 Rom
Here is an example: In the roms/pc98 folder I have the file game.m3u with the following content:
In the folder roms/pc98/.multidisk I keep all the mutidisk images. This way I can keep my es gameslist clean :)
But this approach doesn’t work with CD images and HDD images. Here, a cmd file comes into play: You can use that to boot games with mixed image types (and even m3u files)!
Here is another example for Policenauts: In the roms/pc98 folder I have Policenauts.cmd with the following content:
In the folder roms/pc98/.multidisk I keep all the above mentioned images. The type of image to mount (CD, FD, HD, m3u) is automatically selected by the extension of the image. I read somewhere, that you need to use absolute paths, but maybe relative paths work, too. I don’t know.
disclaimerNone of this was discovered by me. All the infos for doing it this way I found by googeling and browsing the libretro forums. I just hope I could help someone with that.Register • FAQ • Search • LoginView unanswered posts | View active topics It is currently Sat Dec 12, 2020 11:38 pm Page 2 of 3 [ 58 posts ] Go to pagePrevious1, 2, 3NextPrint viewPrevious topic | Next topicAuthorMessageJoined: Sun Jun 03, 2007 7:32 amPosts: 10 It’s still more than month until I’ll be able to try making Policenauts run on my notebook again. So I thought I better start asking beforehand. At the moment Windows should be installed. Fortunenatly I’ve already got the PC98 MS-DOS 6.2 Upgrade Set at home. DOS will contain all the drivers you need (sound card, mouse, etc.). Just format and install. My PC98 came formatted with DOS installed, and after I installed a game, it was ready to go (unless the game required I set the monitor’s output to 24KHz at the system menu, for example).Fri Aug 24, 2007 7:45 pmAfter all I’ve got everything necessary for playing Policenauts but as I mentioned before, Windows 95 is installed instead of DOS.I tried to install DOS but received a message that I’m not allowed to install a new ’domain’ on the HD (固定ディスクでは新規の領域へのインスタールはいけません), though I’m not so sure if ’kotei disk’ means HD. But go ahead and try it first anyway. To start DOS, go to the Start menu, then Programs, then MS-DOS Prompt, then follow the game’s instruction manual. With some testing I found out that the problem is the sounddriver. When I use version 3.10 of AVSDRIVER.SYS I get some lip movement but you get horrible stammer sounds but version 1.00 gives nice sound but you lose the lib animation.I think we need a version of AVSDRIVER.SYS which lies between version 1 and 3, I’m very curious which version epitaph uses.I could make a nice guide how to play policenauts by Anex86 but I don’t know if the version I downloaded is complete or that some data has been corrupted. Especially I think the CD-rom image has some corrupt data because I hear some clipping in the CD-sound when playing the tracks with a CD-player.Osiris could you post the the listing of your system and user disk of Policenauts perhaps with some filesizes too? I then could verify if I have all the files and the right sizes. That’s a start._________________Advice of a RUNner: Beware Snatchers are everywhereMon Aug 27, 2007 2:58 pmJoin

And I guess I won’t succeed in the end anyway. In the meantime I found a relatively inexpensive PC98 desktop and monitor on Yahoo. Desktop has already arrived and the monitor should be there by tomorrow.I guess it wouldn’t be a PC98 if there aren’t some difficulties going to occur. So I thought I better start asking beforehand. At the moment Windows should be installed. Fortunenatly I’ve already got the PC98 MS-DOS 6.2 Upgrade Set at home. When I format the PC, is there anything I’ve to take care of? For instance, there’s already a 86 sound cart integrated. Do I need to reconfigure it after installing DOS? This question might be stupid but does formating a PC98 work the same way as formating a standard PC nowadays?Thank you!Fri Aug 24, 2007 9:55 amJoined: Thu Oct 14, 2004 2:46 amPosts: 3379 At the moment Windows should be installed. Anyway, what needs to be done before I’m able to install DOS? And is it truely necessary to install DOS? I remember that Windows 95 contained a fully-fledged version of DOS but how do I boot this?Sun Aug 26, 2007 10:48 amJoined: Thu Oct 14, 2004 2:46 amPosts: 3379 After all I’ve got everything necessary for playing Policenauts but as I mentioned before, Windows 95 is installed instead of DOS.I tried to install DOS but received a message that I’m not allowed to install a new ’domain’ on the HD (???????????????????????????), though I’m not so sure if ’kotei disk’ means HD. But go ahead and try it first anyway. To start DOS, go to the Start menu, then Programs, then MS-DOS Prompt, then follow the game’s instruction manual. And ’kotei disuku’ means ’hard disk’, yeah.Sun Aug 26, 2007 1:24 pmJoined: Tue Jul 19, 2005 2:57 pmPosts: 117Location: USA, OK I have a question...I can get the game to boot up under Anex86 and the sound works great... however, I can’t seem to get the animations for the lips on either the characters, or the little portraits, to animate. I haven’t seen anyone else talk about this, so I am not sure if this is a deficiency in the emulator, or a setting I just don’t know about... any thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated!Sun Aug 26, 2007 4:09 pmJoined: Tue Jul 24, 2007 9:10 amPosts: 181 Speaking of the Anex86 emulator, I already downloaded all 5 parts of the PC-98 Policenauts ISO. Now how do I get the game to work on an Anex86 emulator?Sun Aug 26, 2007 4:15 pmJoined: Sun Nov 26, 2006 9:07 amPosts: 1380Location: Right Behind You ...Ugh, just worth pointing out that I think we need somebody to create a guide for the PC-98! lolEverybody is having problems it seems...I can tell it’ll be really far down the line until I do get a PC-98 myself, since all the problems this is having, as well as the price, hehehe. Kind of humourous how much of a problem everyone is having, it REALLY makes the PC-98 stand out for all its problems, it certainly hasn’t aged gracefully. Dear oh dear...The system itself isn’t that bad. Keep in mind this is emulation most people are talking about. As for helping to resolve those issues, I don’t have much experience running Anex86, so maybe someone else could lend a hand with that.Sun Aug 26, 2007 7:32 pmJoined: Tue Jul 19, 2005 2:57 pmPosts: 117Location: USA, OK LOL... looks like we might need a guide... I am going to play around with the setting a little and see if I can figure something out, if successful I will let you all know how I was able to make it work. Even in its current form, with out the lip flaps, it still works very well and is more than playable.Sun Aug 26, 2007 7:48 pmJoined: Thu Oct 14, 2004 2:46 amPosts: 3379 Maybe epitaph or MrSeed could talk about how they got around this problem.Sun Aug 26, 2007 11:32 pmJoined: Sun Feb 25, 2007 6:28 pmPosts: 29Location: Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands Maybe epitaph or MrSeed could talk about how they got around this problem.I didn’t notice it earlier because I didn’t play it so far but now you mentioned I see that the lips movement aren’t there.
